Getting over Atomism: Functional Decomposition in Complex Neural Systems

چکیده
Functional decomposition is an important goal in the life sciences, and central to mechanistic explanation explanatory reduction. A growing literature philosophy of science, however, has challenged decomposition-based notions explanation. ‘Holists’ posit that complex systems exhibit context-sensitivity, dynamic interaction, network dependence, these properties undermine decomposition. They then infer from failure I argue complexity, so construed, only incompatible with one notion decomposition, which call ‘atomism’, not writ large. Atomism posits function ascriptions must be made parts minimal reference surrounding system. Complexity does indeed falsify atomism, but contend there a weaker, ‘contextualist’ fully compatible holists cite. Contextualism suggests can shift external context, interactions other might help determine their context-appropriate functions. This still admits functional within given context. will give examples based on oscillatory multiplexing neuroscience. If contextualism feasible, holist inferences are faulty—one cannot presence complexity mechanism, reductionism.

Beyond Atomism
Contemporary metaphysicians have been drawn to a certain attractive picture of the structure of the world. This picture consists in classical mereology, the priority of parts over wholes, and the well-foundedness of metaphysical priority. In this short note, I show that this combination of theses entails superatomism, which is a significant strengthening of mereological atomism. This commitment...
متن کاملBeyond Atomism
In this note, I present a problem for a certain natural view about the structure of the world. I show that this view is committed to a particular strengthening of atomism, which I call superatomism. Superatomism has some counterintuitive consequences (e.g. it rules out whatMarkosian [] calls the ‘pointy view’ of simples). I consider some ways of avoiding this commitment, and draw some additio...
متن کاملMatricial decomposition of systems over rings
This paper extends to non-controllable linear systems over rings the property FCs (s > 0), which means “feedback cyclization with s inputs”: given a controllable system (A, B), there exist a matrix K and a matrix U with s columns such that (A + BK, BU) is controllable. Clearly, FC1 is the usual FC property. The main technique used in this work is the obtention of block decompositions for system...
متن کاملDecomposition and Coordination for Multiobjective Complex Systems
Complex systems are modeled as collections of multiobjective programs each representing a subproblem (a subsystem or component) of the overall system. The subproblems interact with each other in various ways adding to the complexity of the overall problem. Since the calculation of efficient sets of these complex systems presents a challenging problem, it is desirable to decompose the overall sy...
متن کاملQuasi-Primary Decomposition in Modules Over Proufer Domains
In this paper we investigate decompositions of submodules in modules over a Proufer domain into intersections of quasi-primary and classical quasi-primary submodules. In particular, existence and uniqueness of quasi-primary decompositions in modules over a Proufer domain of finite character are proved. Proufer domain; primary submodule; quasi-primary submodule; classical quasi-primary; decompo...
